Frequently Asked Questions.

Is it safe to ship chicks?

Yes. Chicks absorb the yolk inside their egg which gives them the nutrients needed to sustain life for a couple of days. We also ship chicks with feed, gro-gel, and heat packs when necessary. Our boxes are labeled and the USPS has specific procedures for handling packaging containing live animals. We ship our chicks and hatching eggs nationwide. We are NPIP certified. Goats and Idaho Pasture Pigs can be delivered, as well, though this is done a little differently!

How do I order with shipping?

To add shipping to your order, select “Chick Shipping” at checkout. Chick shipping is $65. We ship chicks on Monday and Tuesday. Orders are generally filled the week after your order is placed. On occasion, large orders or high demand can lead to orders being delayed by a few weeks.

How much is shipping?

Chick Shipping is $65 for up to 25 chicks via USPS Priority Mail. Hatching egg shipping is $35 for up to three dozen chicken eggs. Adult chicken shipping varies per order and is based on your location + size of the bird (expect shipping charges of $100+ for these orders). Make sure you select the required shipping or pick up option during checkout. Contact us regarding shipping adult birds.. We do not ship day old quail chicks. Chick shipping includes shipping materials and postage, packages will include grow gel and heat packs when necessary. Hatching egg shipping includes foam egg shippers, packaging, and postage.

Can I pick up my chicks, eggs, or adult birds?

Yes, you can arrange to pick up your purchase in person in Clarksville, Arkansas. These pick ups will not occur on farm, pick up will be in town at a public meeting location. Contact us to arrange a pick-up time. You can text us at (479) 461-8080 for the fastest response.

Can I visit the farm?

We are a biosecure farm, and therefore, closed to the public. Farm visits expose our animals to the potential for inadvertent disease transmission. We do not schedule farm tours or pick up of orders on the farm. This is how we ensure you receive healthy animals.

What is the minimum order?

There is no minimum order. However, we do not guarantee chicks unless you order a minimum of 6 chicks at a time. Chicks huddle together to stay warm, they stress less when they are with a group. We do not recommend ordering less than 6 chicks.

Are there breed minimums?

No, there are no breed minimums. Variety is the spice of life.

Can I change my order after placing it?

We are happy to add items to an order if we have them available. To remove items from an order, a 50% refund will be applied. Cancellations made after 7 days prior to scheduled ship/pick-up date will not be refunded. Any refunds issued will be less online processing fees (1% to 6% of total, depending on payment method).

When will a specific breed be available?

If a breed is listed as “sold out” on our website, we are out of stock of that breed. To be the first notified of restock, please subscribe to our email list and follow us on Facebook @southerneditionfarm.

What are your recommended care guidelines?

New chicks need constant access to fresh food and water. Set up and pre-heat your brooder prior to bringing your chicks home. A simple digital thermometer can be placed in the bottom of the brooder to make sure the chicks have access to the correct temperatures. Shoot for 95F initially, with room in the brooder for the chicks to move into a cooler area if they’d like. Fill their waterer with luke-warm water. When you get the chicks home, gently dip their beak into this warm water to let them know where the water is. You can add an additional waterer with electrolytes and probiotics if you’d like, just be sure to mix the dilution according to instructions. It’s important to always include a plain fresh water source in addition to the optional electrolyte and probiotic water. Chicks need a low stress environment. They feel most secure in a flock, so be sure they have plenty of other chick friends. Limit handling of chicks after their trip home so they can acclimate to their new environment. Once they feel comfortable and begin thriving, that’s the time to handle them more extensively.

Do you Vaccinate your Chicks?

By request! If you’d like your chicks vaccinated, let us know when you contact us to arrange pick up.

Do you have a feed recommendation?

We feed Shawnee Mills brand feed because it’s a local, family owned mill that performs with excellence. We really admire what they do. Our chicks start out eating their “All Mash.” If you don’t have access to this feed, any commercial chick starter will do the trick. Just be sure to store your feed in a dry, closed container so it doesn’t become a pest attractant.

How do you ship pigs and goats?

Our Nigerian Dwarf Goats and Idaho Pasture Pigs can be delivered via ground transport or air transport. Prices vary on time of year, logistics, and mileage. One could expect this type of transportation to be as low as $250 for shared ground transport where you have a flexible receiving schedule, and as high as $1500 for solo VIP trips directly to your doorstep with specific receiving schedules and/or time restrictions.

Do you Guarantee your Hatching Eggs?

We do not guarantee the hatch rate of the eggs you will receive. Your results will be anywhere from 0% to 100%. If you are not comfortable with this, please do not purchase hatching eggs. We cannot control shipping conditions or your incubation conditions. We will not sell eggs we do not successfully hatch ourselves. If your hatching egg package is damaged when you receive it, immediately report the issue to the post office (before you leave the post office). This will allow you to request compensation for your damaged package. You are responsible for handling these claims with the post office (we cannot mediate issues with damaged hatching egg packages and the post office, this is USPS policy).

What is your refund policy?

We guarantee your chicks for 48 hours after your purchase them. We will refund or replace chicks lost during this time period. We do everything possible to make sure your birds have had the best care while in our possession. We will not sell chicks unless they are thriving. In cases of neglect, funds will not be refunded. Please expect to be asked questions and/or be prepared to show photographic evidence of any significant losses. Any refunds or returns after this 48 hour period will be at sole discretion of Southern Edition Farm Ownership. No returns or refunds on hatching eggs, juvenile birds, or adult birds.
